INTRODUCTION– Everyone can agree that we have an enormous problem on our hands: the environment’s rapidly deteriorating health. Ozone depletion, desertification, and deforestation are a few problems on an ever-growing list that threatens to destroy our planet.
So,green manufacturing was coined to reflect the new manufacturing paradigm that employs various green strategies and techniques to become more eco-efficient. These strategies include creating products/systems that consumes less material and energy, substituting input materials (e.g. non-toxic for toxic renewable for non-renewable) reducing unwanted output and converting output to input (recycling).
HOW TO SET UP GREEN MANUFACTURING-Green manufacturing has become a trend to become a mainstay of the manufacturing process. In addition, going green can help a manufacturing business cut down on their energy costs and even save money on insurance rates. There are certain things that we can do to incorporate green manufacturing into our business:
– Manufacturers need to first take a look at their production process and find where the waste is coming from. Most manufacturing processes have some harmful emissions and waste that they are putting out. Steps should be taken to stop this.
-One of the mainstays of green manufacturing is setting up the method of recycling. Manufacturers can first step up recycling stations for any product waste that can be recycled or used again.
-Green manufacturing is still a new practice so we have to take the time and make the effort to train employees about how they can be involved. When the staff understands the importance of green manufacturing they will be much more likely to get behind the programs..
-Manufacturers who are making an effort to go green , are also making it a priority to only purchase raw materials from green suppliers.
SAVING THE PLANET WITH GREEN MANUFACTURING–Green manufacturing is a great way to gain positive publicity for the company but more then that it’s a cost effective way to make sure that the employees and the overall company is healthier.
Here are some tips we can follow in order to convert our plant to a green manufacturing facility
-Reducing the consumption of natural resources by using solar energy and power to fuel the business.
-Unplug machines that are not in use. Leaving the machines plugged in actually does suck power.
-Reduce the amount of waste that company produces.
-Changing the lights to energy-saving lights.
-Introducing a recycling program within the company and encouraging employees to dump recyclable materials into the correct bins.
-Starting to purchase green products and encouraging employees to do the same.
-Purchasing a water fountain and avoid using bottled water.
-Purchasing green materials like recycled paper and plastics.
THE BENEFITS OF GOING TO GREEN MANUFACTURING- Going green can benefit the manufacturing company in many ways. Not only it will benefit the environment, but it will also impact the consumer and the company perception in the market.
The first benefit to going green is the impact it will have on the environment. The government is even offering tax breaks for manufacturers and even the insurance companies are giving better rate to manufacturing companies that are taking steps to go green.
The second benefit to going green is the money it will save. Manufacturers can look for machinery that is earth friendly. Wind and solar energy are simple ways to go green.
The third benefit to going green is the help it will provide to the community at large.New manufacturing plants that are opening with renewable energy sources are offering many more jobs to their communities.
Going green can also produces a better air quality for the employees and the community. It is one of the biggest benefits of going green and for the planet.
CONCLUSION-Going green has been in the mission statement of several manufacturing companies lately. To reduce waste, several manufacturing companies have started going green. Not only going green is important for profit margin, it is our responsibility to respect the environment. With all the benefits of going green, it is impossible to believe that there are still some companies that have not considered going green yet. I believe that our push for a green future not only has a great effect on our pocketbooks, but also out ability to avoid diseases, loss of work (from sickness), and the loss of loved ones who passed to soon because of the body full of toxins.
